I’ve always sent my parents part of my paycheck. But after my wife gave birth to our first child, I told them, “Money’s tight right now. You’re on your own.” They said they understood. The next day, I found my wife crying. My mother had come by while I was at work, leaving bags of groceries and slipping money into the baby’s diaper bag. My parents weren’t wealthy—Dad drove a delivery truck and Mom cleaned houses—yet even when I couldn’t give, they gave back without hesitation.
