The couple moved to Nairobi National Park, hoping to deepen their work and build a safe haven for the animals they loved. But shortly after their arrival, tragedy struck.

David passed away suddenly.

The man who had spent his life protecting elephants — the man Daphne loved, worked with, and dreamed with — was gone.

Grief could have ended everything.
Instead, Daphne turned her heartbreak into purpose.

She created the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, now known as The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust — an organization dedicated entirely to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing orphaned elephants back into the wild.

One woman.
One promise.
And thousands of lives that would change because of it.

The Babies Left to Die

Among the first elephants Daphne rescued was a group of calves found in horrifying condition. Poachers had targeted their mother for her tusks. But to get to her, they trapped the babies in a deep, cold well — leaving them to die slowly while they hunted her down.

By the time Daphne discovered them, the babies were weak, shivering, and barely conscious.

She knelt beside them and saw confusion in their eyes — the kind of confusion that only comes from losing everything familiar. A mother’s touch. A mother’s warmth. A mother’s heartbeat.
