But the lawyer insisted — “Please, for Sam’s sake.” Reluctantly, David agreed. The lawyer handed him a letter. It was from Sam’s biological father. The letter revealed a heartbreaking truth: Sam’s parents had loved him deeply and accepted him despite his diagnosis. But when Sam was just three months old, both parents were in a car accident. His mother died instantly, and his father was left paralyzed and unable to care for a child. Believing Sam deserved a better life, he placed him for adoption.

“You were the father I wished I could be,” the letter read.
