I left it.
Right there, on top of my locker at the café — a cheap bottle of wine with a bow I’d tied myself.

When I stepped off the bus, the sunset had turned their big white house into something out of a bridal magazine.
I gripped my tote bag tightly, slipping around the side gate.
I prayed I could sneak in to change before anyone noticed. But I didn’t even make it to the bathroom. Three steps into the hallway…

She looked at me like I’d dragged mud on her marble floors.
“Oh! Did you come to… serve tonight, dear?”

I’m… I’m John’s girlfriend.”
“How delightful,” she cooed. “In that outfit?”
“I was late — work called me in. I didn’t have time…”
Suddenly, she raised a hand.
“Everyone! May I have your attention?”
John appeared beside her, but his eyes darted away when I looked at him.
“I was so excited to meet my son’s girlfriend,” she said, her voice sugar-sweet and poisonous. “I didn’t expect her to show up looking like she’d been mucking out stables.”
