Buddy sat beside him, whining softly, his paw resting lightly on her arm, as if he could sense her fragility and wanted to comfort her.
“Home…”
Then her eyes closed again.
The paramedics arrived swiftly, moving with the kind of precision that comes from years of training.
They checked her vitals and wrapped her in thermal blankets. One of them, a young man with a buzz cut, looked at Daniel and Jake with a grave expression.
“She’s hypothermic,” he said. “If you hadn’t found her when you did, she wouldn’t have survived another hour.”
Daniel and Jake were stunned. They couldn’t understand why Buddy, a dog they had only adopted four months earlier, had run straight to her in the middle of a vast forest. Who was she, and why had he known exactly where to find her?
They had adopted Buddy from a small shelter in rural Pennsylvania. He was scrawny, nervous, and wary of everything around him.
