Every time I got home from work, my daughter would ask, “Did you bring me anything?” The only thing I could think of to get her was a wooden sword. It never even crossed my mind that she might want a doll or a dress.

After separating from my wife in 1994, I decided not to date because I didn’t want anything to take time away from my sons. Now they’re grown, but I’ve been single for so long that I doubt I’ll ever meet anyone. Dating has changed so much — I think I’m just meant to stay single.

I even took her to my hairdresser, who made it look beautiful. I bought all the same products and took notes. But within two days, it was back to being a mess. At first, I worried people would judge me, but now I know I’m doing my best, and I’m a great dad.
